4 Days in Kuala Lumpur!
Day 1 –
The journey to Kuala Lumpur started at London Heathrow! We were enjoying a couple of bevvies and then saw Charlie Sloth… we knew it was going to be a good trip!
If you’re not fazed about long distance travelling then the 13-hour flight will be a breeze. We arrived in Kuala Lumpur on 10th November 2018 at 15:25. As we were stopping in Bukit Bintang, we brought two ‘Touch and Go’ tickets for the KLIA Ekspres using our Revolut card which took approximately 35 minutes to KL Sentral (Monorail). When we arrived, we caught the monorail to Bukit Bintang which was the second part of our commute.
We exited the station to be greeted by a downpour. Hm… this was going to be an interesting walk to the hotel! What was supposed to be 5 minutes journey took double the time. We made it to the ‘Tribeca Serviced Suites’, I would highly recommend booking this apartment as it is excellent value for money and even has breakfast included.
Our intentions for the rest of the day were to explore the ‘Jalan Alor’ night food court and the variety of food it had to offer. This was approximately 20 minutes away from the apartment. Here you will find food vendors trying to draw your custom in. Be sure to take the opportunity to check the menu although many of the vendors serve similar dishes. We grabbed a spot at our chosen vendor and enjoyed the delicious food we had ordered! As we both love oriental dishes we were in our element! We did also try the infamous Durian fruit which was smelly and had a weird texture, it was definitely a no from us!
Day 2 –
We started the day early by getting our breakfast at the Wizards at Tribeca. This was delicious and gave us the strength we needed to face the humidity outside. Our plan today was to see the Petronas Twin Towers which were approximately a 25 minute walk away from our apartment. You may want to book your tickets in advance to ensure your admission and avoid disappointment. Our slot was at 14:30 therefore we went to ‘Suria KLCC Mall’ located inside the Petronas Twin Towers. A ritual for us has become checking out the menu at McDonalds and trying their weird and wonderful inventions, unfortunately we weren’t pleased with the food but did enjoy the grape slush! We didn’t spend too much time in the Mall before going up 41 floors to cast our eyes over the city of Kuala Lumper on the highest double decker skybridge in the world. The views were spectacular but it didn’t end there! We were taken within seconds to the 86th floor to the observation desk… this was a sight to see! Our tour came to an end and we decided we would return to the ‘Pavilion’ to feast at the food court. That was wishful thinking as the heavens had opened! Not only that, it was lightening and thundering which was really scary! Taking no chances, we sheltered ourselves and watched from afar before deciding to go to the aquarium located in the Mall.
Once the coast was clear, we headed back to the ‘Pavilion’ to witness several cars drowning in a nearby parking lot… this was crazy! Swiftly moving on, we went on to dine at ‘Gravy Baby’ which we both fell in love with as the food here was phenomenal! With our bellies full, we headed back to the apartment which was approximately a 6-minute walk away. We bizarrely decided we wanted to get into the infinity pool although it was spitting with rain. We spent time admiring the night skyline before retiring to bed.
Day 3 –
We had a busy day ahead so again we started early. We indulged in our breakfast before we collected our rented car from Eurocar booked via Rentalcars.com the day before! We decided to do this as the sites we wanted to visit were far from the city. We didn’t opt for the tours as we wanted to explore at our own pace and leisure. Suresh was the driver which meant I was navigating. Honestly, this is the most dreaded job as I can’t for the life of me read directions when abroad. Shockingly, we managed to arrive at the Batu Caves which approximately took 30 minutes from our apartment. The Batu Caves are famously known for the vibrant Temples and the 272 colouful steep steps leading you to the Caves! There is no entry fee but we did make donations when in the Temples. A word of warning, be mindful of the mischievous monkeys and your belongings! We spent approximately 1 hour here before driving to the ‘Kuala Gandah Elephant Sanctuary’. The journey time was approximately 1 hour 30 minutes. We did read the reviews beforehand as we were mindful of how the elephants were treated and cared for. The majority of the reviews on TripAdvisor were positive. We did want to bath the elephants however due to the rainy season this was not available. If you do not want to miss this then make sure you plan your trip in the warmer seasons where the water levels are much lower! When we arrived, there was no entry fee but we did make a donation. We were really eager to see the elephants and we seized the opportunity to stroke and feed them! Again, you have to purchase the sugarcane at a small cost. It was evident that the staff were truly invested in the well-being of the elephants. We thoroughly enjoyed our experience!
Our next stop was the ‘Kampung Kuantan Firefly Park which was approximately 2 hours 20 minutes away. This was a stressful drive as the headlights on our car were poor and the sun was setting. The Firefly Park was located in the middle of nowhere! As we were drove along a road surrounded by acres of palm trees we heard a THUD! Luckily, it was only a collapsed tree in the middle of the road! Given we were in the middle of nowhere and it was pitched black… we continued as we were soon to arrive. As I’m super cautious about tyres and have an irrational fear of them randomly exploding, I had a quick check when getting out the car. The rubber from the inner tyre was casually hanging out. This was all we needed! As the Firefly Park was due to close soon, we decided to deal with it after.
We did wait around for 20 minutes for it to begin. It turned out to be decent as we saw so many firefly’s whilst on the boat tour. Not going to lie, we would’ve been happy with a 5-minute ride as we had the car tyre in the back of our mind! It lasted approximately 30 minutes. Once the tour had finished, we headed back to the car and managed to change it to the spare wheel. This was difficult as it was pitch black and the only source of light was our mobile phone torches. Anyway, we managed to safely get ourselves back to the apartment and decided to get dinner from ‘Gravy Baby’ again. We were stuffed but we had the best sleep!
Day 4 –
The car needed returning today so we set off early to avoid rushing. Unfortunately, I directed Suresh the wrong way so we got stuck in traffic! The atmosphere was intense as I could feel Suresh’s frustration as the car was due to be returned at 09:00. We were 5 minutes late which was fine as the guy working there was pretty chilled. We rented the car with premium insurance; we did not have to pay for the tyre damage. Woo, it all works out in the end!
We decided to visit the ‘KL Tower’ for one last look at the skyline of Kuala Lumpur. We queued to take a few photos in the glass box that hangs about 10 meters off the edge of the tower. This was pretty scary as the KL Tower is 420 meters high! The photographer had Suresh do all sorts of dodgy poses… it was pretty cringe! Once we had finished here, we walked to the ‘Petaling’ street market which took 30 minutes. We really liked this place as we had a ton of fun haggling for all sorts of items. We spent approximately 1-2 hours here before going back to ‘Jalan Alor’ for food. As this was our last night, we wanted to check out the KLCC Lake Symphony Water Fountain show. It made for a good viewing but was nothing like The Dubai Fountain! For us, I think 4 days were sufficient in Kuala Lumpur as we were able to tick off all the things we wanted to do!
